Automatic Transmissions
Automatic transmissions fitted to today’s cars are very complex systems which work in conjunction with the cars engine management system to enable the car to obtain a smooth transition between gear changes and also obtain the lowest fuel consumption possible.
This complex system is very reliable but if a fault occurs then the electronic side of the system can go into what is commonly known as limp home mode.
This means if there is a fault detected the gearbox may be locked electronically into a fixed gear i.e. third gear to enable the car to be driven home or to a garage for the system to be interrogated. This will normally be shown to the driver via a dash or centre consul fault light being illuminated.
